PTE BUSES INDEX
This page links you to photographs of buses belonging to PTE's and their successors. PTE's originated in 1968, taking over the bus operations of towns and cities within their designated areas.
Merseyside PTE was formed in 1968 from the bus fleets of Liverpool, Birkenhead and Wirral. The St. Helens and Southport fleets were forced into the PTE in 1974, despite the majority of inhabitants of both towns not wanting to be included in the so-called county of Merseyside. After deregulation in 1986, Merseyside PTE had to set up a separate company, trading as Merseybus, to operate the bus fleet. The Tory administration forced it to privatise itself, achieved by sale to employees as MTL (Merseyside Transport Limited). MTL in turn sold out to the Arriva group in 2000.
Greater Manchester PTE, originally called SELNEC, eventually took over the bus operations of Ashton under Lyne, Bolton, Bury, Leigh, Manchester, Oldham, Rochdale, Salford, Stockport and Wigan, plus SHMD (Stalybridge, Hyde, Mossley & Dukinfield Joint Board). It also purchased the independent Lancashire United Transport (LUT) and also the local bus operations of the original North Western bus company form the NBC.
Pages for GMTE & successors will (hopefully) be added later in 2005.
