Train
Timing, Page 3: - Speed Measurement Table.
The table below shows
the times (in seconds) required to cover ¼, ½ and
1 mile at speeds ranging from 10 to 140 mph. For example, at a constant
79 mph it will take 11.39 seconds for ¼ mile, 22.78 seconds
for ½ mile and 45.57 seconds for 1 mile.
(If you assume that the
distances are in kilometres instead of miles, then the same table
can be used for speeds in kph.)

Beware of misplaced mileposts.
Milepost 165½, between Crewe and Winsford, is one of the
worst, being about 3 chains from the correct location. Ignoring
this error gives you a very inaccurate estimate of the train speed.
Other mileposts may be only a few yards out of position. If the
time between successive mileposts fluctuates wildly, this is often
an indication of one or more mileposts being incorrectly sited,
rather than a sudden increase or decrease in speed.
